Kentucky Mountain Horses:
Meet Dapple and Grey!

(Hooray! You found the bonus page!)

Gentle mother Dapple and her young colt Grey are the mascots of Dapple Grey Books. They represent a very special group of horse breeds called Mountain Horses, which were bred right in eastern Kentucky (the home of DGB). The Rocky Mountain Horse, the Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse, and the Mountain Pleasure Horse all fall under this umbrella term.

A source of pride for the people of the Appalachian Mountains, these horses have gone down in history as gentle, hard-working, and loyal companions—values which Dapple Grey Books holds in high regard. As their name implies, these horses are sure-footed on mountain trails and are notably comfortable to ride. One of their most distinguishing features is their special "run-walk" gate, an extra fast walk unique to the breed.

Did you know that "Dapple Grey" is a horse color, not a breed?

Dapple's coat is a dappled grey color, meaning that several strands of her hair have turned light overtime to create a speckled, ashy look. Grey's color is based on a dapple grey foal, which starts life without any dapples and is usually much darker in color. He's just started to get a few dapples himself!
